BCA Endowment Foundation Brochure
A printed piece that was mailed to members to help preserve the legacy of those that came before us.
The Concept
The Buddhist Churches of America (BCA) was established in the United States 125 years ago. The symbolism throughout the brochure has deep roots in Japanese culture, the country from which this religious organization came. Because of this, the design elements for this brochure were used with intention and reverence.
The theme, utilizing water and koi, was chosen because of the flowing nature and adaptability they both have. Water continues to flow and persevere in and around obstacles in it's path. The waves in the design flow from page to page, growing in swell, and connect through out the brochure, forming an infinite loop.
The Symbolism
The water represents Buddha nature, purity, clarity & calm.
Koi in Japanese culture, symbolizes perseverance, good
fortune, abundance; in Buddhism, koi symbolizes perseverance and courage; the 10 koi represents the Ten Perfections.
The ripples symbolize cause & effect and karma.
Ichimatsu (the checkered pattern) represents prosperity of descendants, expansion of business.
Asanoha (the diamond pattern) represents growth, children's health, protection from harm.
Shippo (the circle pattern) represents the Seven Treasures.
Seigaiha (the wave pattern) represents peaceful living & good luck.
As shown below, the wave and other elements from the brochure connect from page to page, cover to cover, creating an infinite loop. This shows the interconnectedness and interdependence of existence. The rise and fall of the wave symbolizes the ups and downs of life.
